Help & Guides

Everything you need to get from a raw video to finished subtitles.

Installing Caption Cut

1 Download the installer

Go to the download page and pick your platform. Caption Cut runs on macOS (Apple Silicon) and Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit).

2 Install it

  • macOS: open the .dmg and drag Caption Cut into Applications. The first time you open it, right-click the app and choose Open, then confirm — macOS shows a warning for apps it has not seen before.
  • Windows: run the .exe. If SmartScreen appears, click More info then Run anyway.

These warnings appear because the installers are not yet code-signed. Nothing is being sent anywhere — the app works fully offline.

3 Start the free trial

Caption Cut opens straight into a 3-day free trial with Pro features enabled. No account, no card, no sign-in, and nothing is charged when it ends.

Your first subtitles

1 Add your media

Drag a video or audio file onto the window, or click to browse. Common formats are supported, including MP4, MOV, MKV, MP3, WAV and M4A.

2 Choose a mode

  • Dialogue — interviews, podcasts, tutorials, vlogs
  • Song — music with vocals; isolates the voice before timing
  • Bhajan / devotional — chants and repeated lines, tuned for Sanskrit and devotional Hindi

The mode changes how lines are split and timed, so picking the right one matters more than any other setting.

3 Pick a quality level

  • Fast — quickest, good for a rough pass or a first look
  • Balanced — the everyday choice
  • Studio — most accurate, slowest, and needs the most memory

On a machine with 8 GB of RAM, prefer Balanced or Fast. Studio can run out of memory on smaller machines, and Caption Cut will tell you if it does.

4 Generate

Press Generate. The first run downloads the AI model, which takes a few minutes depending on your connection. After that it is reused and everything runs offline. Progress is shown as it works, and you can carry on using the rest of the app.

AI models and downloads

Caption Cut downloads speech models on demand rather than bundling gigabytes into the installer.

Editing subtitles

The editor shows your media, a waveform timeline, and the subtitle list side by side.

Raw and Formatted transcripts are kept separately, so you can restructure the layout without losing the original transcription.

Songs and lyrics

Music is harder than speech: vocals sit under instruments, notes are held, and lines repeat. Song and Bhajan modes handle this.

Exporting

Layout presets are included for YouTube, Netflix-style, Shorts and TikTok, karaoke, bhajan, podcast and compact formats. For vertical video, choose the 9:16 preset before exporting so the text is sized correctly.

Batch processing

Drop a folder, or add several files, and Caption Cut will work through them one after another. It matches how many it runs at once to how much memory your machine has, so a queue will not run your computer out of RAM. You can burn subtitles into video directly from the queue.

Your licence

Troubleshooting

macOS says the app "cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified"

Right-click Caption Cut in Applications, choose Open, then confirm. This is needed only the first time. It appears because the app is not yet code-signed.

Windows SmartScreen blocks the installer

Click More info, then Run anyway. Same reason as above.

"Not enough free memory"

The Studio model needs a lot of RAM. Switch to Balanced or Fast, close other applications, and try again.

Transcription is inaccurate

Try a higher quality level, set the language explicitly instead of leaving it on automatic, and make sure you picked the right mode — Song mode on speech, or Dialogue mode on music, both hurt accuracy.

Subtitles do not line up with the singing

Use Song or Bhajan mode so vocals are isolated first. If you have the lyrics, paste them in — timing improves substantially when Caption Cut knows what the words are.

A model download failed

Check your connection and retry from the model list. Downloads resume rather than starting over, and each one can be stopped individually.

The app cannot find my video's audio

Some containers use codecs the system cannot decode. Convert to MP4 or extract the audio to WAV and load that instead.
